Beadboard Ceiling

In all my previous houses, I wanted to do something interesting to the ceilings,
the 5th wall as some decorators call it.

Wood, beams, stencil, wallpaper...

So, in this House with Potential, I am incorporating many of the things I always wanted to do, but didn't, either because of money, time, or appeal to the masses for resale.

To start with, the ceilings in this house were popcorn. Those of you in California know what I'm talking about. So, before we even moved in, my son and I scraped all that mess off the ceilings. But that's where it stopped.

They are still mostly bare drywall.
Last week my daughter came over to help me with some projects and we decided to get started on the family room ceiling.

Originally, I had planned to use beadboard panels, 4'x8', cut in half to make them easier to work with, and beams to hide the seams. But I would need Husband for this project and he is working quite a bit, so I wasn't sure when it would happen. Every so often, I would suggest starting this project, but...well...you know how it goes.

So last year, when I discovered beadboard wallpaper at Lowes and used it on my interior doors, I started rethinking my ceilings.

Not only would it be easier and cheaper, I could actually do this myself, on my own timeline.

It worked like a charm. I put the paper up in 4'x8' pieces to keep it easy to work with and to keep it centered. I used good wallpaper glue, since it was going on the ceiling and would have to battle gravity.

Then we put up small (1"x3") beams to hide the seams.

Love, love, LOVE it!

We even got the crown molding up!

And see those weathered posts in the doorway? They spent some years in the garden and now look perfect!

Husband is so excited, he's ready to do more ceilings! I had better jump on this while he's still in this mood!

I am going to do the same thing in the master bedroom, and I'm considering using a different wallpaper in the kitchen that will look like a tin ceiling.

I'll let you know how those projects turn out!

Beadboard Wallpaper on the Refrigerator

Yup, I found a new place to use beadboard wallpaper!

While looking at this picture from a recent post, I made a decision about this "temporary" refrigerator: I would wallpaper it! Yes, you heard me right, wallpaper.

First, this was supposed to be a short-term refrigerator, bought when our 20-something one died while we were trying to sell our last house. It was supposed to stay with the house or go to one of the kids who might need it. This was six years ago and it's still with us.

Second, I have put beadboard on a refrigerator before. It was on its last leg, so I figured I had nothing to lose if it didn't work out.

When we made new cupboard doors in the kitchen, I used Liquid Nails to glue a beadboard panel to the front of the refrigerator and it looked great! I wish I had a picture of that refrigerator!

So, I decided it couldn't hurt with this one either and would probably look better than it did now.

I just measured the refrigerator doors and cut the wallpaper to fit. I made a paper template for the door handles and cut them out, making sure to cut along the lines of the wallpaper whenever I could.

When it came to the ice dispenser, I taped the piece of wallpaper to the door and used a pencil to lightly draw the lines I needed to cut out.

I then used some paintable calk around those places just to make sure there were no loose ends.

 It's a HUGE improvement!

The Evolution of Bead Board

I have been putting beadboard wallpaper on my family room ceiling this week, and as I have been working, I have been reflecting on the many ways I have used beadboard over the years, and how much I appreciate this new way to get the look, especially when putting it on a ceiling!

In our first house, way back in the 80's, we put beadboard in our dining room as wainscoting. This was in the days before Home Depot and other big box stores that catered to the home improvement junkie, so Husband had to do it the traditional way, one board at a time.
Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of this lovely room because it was so long ago.

In the mid-90's, we remodeled our kitchen in a different house.
This time we used beadboard panels, much easier!
We used it for the cupboard doors,
(You can see in this closeup how we did it: cut beadboard to size,
add trim around the outside, hang and add hardware. It was pretty easy!)

the island and pantry doors
(Hard to see from this distance, but my old pictures are pretty limited!)

We even covered the refrigerator!
It was 20 years old, so if it didn't work out, there was nothing to lose.
We cut the beadboard panels to size, then glued them on with Liquid Nails.
I wish I had pictures of the refrigerator, but again, so long ago...

When we moved into this house two years ago, I planned to use a lot of beadboard, especially on some of the ceilings.
We bought some panels and stored them in the shed.

But last year I discovered Pinterest, and shortly after that,
 I discovered beadboard wallpaper!
At the time, I was trying to figure out how to get my ugly, hollow core doors to look like custom ones without breaking the bank.

Eureka! I had a genius moment and these doors are the result!

This year, when I was thinking about starting on the ceilings, I decided it would be much easier to put wallpaper upside down than big wooden panels, and I could do it without Husband, thus I would not have to wait until he had time.
Here's the beginning. When I get it done, I'll show you the finished project
and explain how I did it.

And those beadboard panels in the shed? After the holidays, I'm going to make a new headboard!
